একটি ভালো বৃদ্ধাশ্রমে সাধারণত খাবার, বাসস্থান, চিকিৎসা, নিরাপত্তা এবং বিনোদনের ব্যবস্থা থাকে। সেখানে ডাক্তার ও সেবাকর্মীরা বৃদ্ধদের দেখাশোনা করেন। একই বয়সের মানুষের সঙ্গে সময় কাটানোর ফলে তাদের মানসিক কষ্ট ও নিঃসঙ্গতা কিছুটা কমে যায়। অনেক বৃদ্ধাশ্রমে ধর্মীয় অনুষ্ঠান, ব্যায়াম, গল্পগুজব এবং সাংস্কৃতিক কার্যক্রমেরও ব্যবস্থা করা হয়।
তবে বৃদ্ধাশ্রমের অস্তিত্ব আমাদের সমাজের একটি দুঃখজনক বাস্তবতাও তুলে ধরে। বাবা-মা সারাজীবন সন্তানদের জন্য ত্যাগ স্বীকার করেন। তাই বার্ধক্যে তাদের পাশে থাকা সন্তানদের নৈতিক দায়িত্ব। পরিবারে বৃদ্ধদের সম্মান করা এবং তাদের সুখে-দুঃখে পাশে থাকা প্রত্যেক মানুষের কর্তব্য।
সবশেষে বলা যায়, যেসব বৃদ্ধ মানুষের দেখাশোনা করার কেউ নেই, তাদের জন্য বৃদ্ধাশ্রম গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা পালন করে। তবে আমাদের উচিত এমন একটি মানবিক সমাজ গড়ে তোলা যেখানে বৃদ্ধ মানুষরা পরিবারের স্নেহ, সম্মান ও ভালোবাসার মধ্যেই জীবনের শেষ সময় কাটাতে পারেন।
