একদিন এক কৃষক ঘোড়ার পিঠে কয়েক বস্তা গম নিয়ে একটি চাতালের দিকে যাচ্ছিল। চাতালটি তার গ্রাম থেকে কয়েক কিলোমিটার দূরে ছিল। পথে হঠাৎ ঘোড়াটি হোঁচট খায় এবং একটি গমের বস্তা মাটিতে পড়ে যায়। কৃষকটি খুব বিপদে পড়ে গেল, কারণ আশেপাশে তাকে সাহায্য করার মতো কেউ ছিল না।

হঠাৎ সে দেখতে পেল একজন ঘোড়সওয়ার তার দিকে এগিয়ে আসছে। লোকটি কাছে আসতেই কৃষক হতাশ হয়ে পড়ল, কারণ তিনি ছিলেন একজন ক্ষমতাবান জমিদার। যদিও জমিদারটি দয়ালু ও সহানুভূতিশীল ছিলেন, তবুও কৃষক তাকে সাহায্যের কথা বলতে সংকোচ বোধ করছিল।

কৃষক সম্মানের সঙ্গে টুপি খুলে বলল,

হুজুর, আমি কীভাবে আপনার প্রতি কৃতজ্ঞতা প্রকাশ করব?”

জমিদার মৃদু হেসে বললেন,

এটা খুব সহজ। যখনই তুমি কাউকে বিপদে দেখবে, তাকে সাহায্য করার সর্বোচ্চ চেষ্টা করবে। তাহলেই আমাকে ধন্যবাদ জানানো হবে।”
